Washington Governor Declares State Of Emergency Over Measles Outbreak

The governor of Washington declared a state public health emergency Friday after more than two dozen measles cases have been reported, primarily affecting small children.

Health officials have said 21 of the reported measles cases have affected children between the ages of one and 10.

Clark County Public Health has identified 35 confirmed cases and 11 suspected cases since January 1, when it first began investigating the outbreak. Over the weekend, nine more cases were discovered. At least 31 of those sick were not vaccinated.

"Measles are so contagious that if you are not immunized against it you will nearly for sure get it if you are exposed to someone who has the disease", Danielle Koenig with Washington Department of Health said.

According to the centre, children in B.C. receive two doses of measles-containing vaccine during routine immunization, with the first at 12 months of age and the second at four years of age or school entry.

The vaccination rate in the area is 78 percent, lower than average, and that's making it harder to contain the outbreak.

Counties like King are at 91 percent, Snohomish 90.2 percent and Pierce 92.1 percent. In all but four instances, the person who had contracted the disease had not been immunized.

Washington and OR are among the country's many states that allow parents with a personal OR philosophical objection to decline the measles vaccination, among some others.

A measles outbreak in Washington State has triggered a state of emergency.

Measles is perfectly preventable thanks to vaccines, but due to people who stand to gain from vaccine skepticism, some parents are choosing to put their children and many other people at risk. Although it's not clear where he became infected, the man said he'd recently traveled to Clark County. He says his bill will only allow medical exemptions. Many of these efforts will include "investigations" and "laboratory testings" to protect the communities involved. Neurological disorders and swelling, deafness and compromised immune systems are some of the problems people could face even years after recovering from the measles.

The vaccine has been part of routine childhood shots for decades, and measles was declared eliminated in the U.S.in 2000.
