Astros sign Miley to one-year deal

Wade Miley Astros agree to $4.5 million 1-year deal

The Astros are looking for rotation help after losing Lance McCullers Jr. for the season to Tommy John surgery and Charlie Morton to the Tampa Bay Rays in free agency. But they finally pulled the trigger on a move Thursday, agreeing to terms with lefty Wade Miley.

The deal is worth $4.5 million for one year and the contract includes $500,000 in incentives.

Miley spent last season with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 5-2 with an earned-run average of 2.57 over 16 starts. He's bounced around quite a bit since his early days with the Diamondbacks. "We've been behind the scenes, pursuing him for a few years, and everything came together this year". In fact, a year ago, Miley had to settle for a minor league contract with the Brewers after being unable to secure a guaranteed contract with a big league club. The 33-year-old was coming off a string of disappointing seasons, but bounced back with the most effective season of his eight-year Major League Baseball career.

Miley can make an additional $100,000 for hitting each of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 games started or when he reaches 25, 35, 45, 55 and 60 relief appearances, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney. He missed the first five weeks of 2018 with a groin injury, and another two months with an oblique strain. Prior to his strong 2018 season, he posted consecutive seasons with an ERA well north of 5.00.

Eagles expected to pick up Nick Foles’ $20M option
The first shoe in the dynamic just dropped, as Ian Rapoport is reporting that the team will pick up his $20 million mutual option. If the Eagles, however, allow him to become a free agent, they would receive a compensatory draft pick, Rapoport said.

Overall, Miley is 71-76 with a 4.26 ERA in 216 games (212 starts). He may have looked the part of a frontline starter in 2018, but many will be skeptical that he'll be able to do it again in 2019. "I got a little taste of it a year ago". Keuchel is still available on the open market.

Houston will probably put Collin McHugh in one of the spots, as well, while Josh James and Framber Valdez will battle for the final position in the rotation. Dallas Keuchel became a free agent after the World Series and remains unsigned.

The Rangers said Hammel received an invitation to spring training. But the Astros shouldn't necessarily be expecting that.
