Aurora Gunman Obtained Firearm Permit Despite Felony Conviction

Five people were tragically murdered when a man opened fire inside a manufacturing warehouse in Aurora, Illinois, on Friday.

Gary Martin, 45, has been identified by police and relatives as the gunman who opened fire at the Henry Pratt Co. warehouse in Aurora, Illinois, on Friday afternoon.

Aurora police Chief Kristen Ziman said Saturday that Gary Martin was issued a firearm owner's identification card in January of 2014 after he passed the initial background check.

However, his Smith & Wesson handgun - the same weapon used in Friday's shooting - was never confiscated. During the fingerprinting and background process, Martin's conviction for aggravated assault in MS in 1995, in which he served 2 1/2 years in prison, was discovered and his concealed carry application was denied.

Ziman said police records show that the letter was sent, but she doesn't know whether police attempted to follow up.

Wehner grew up in Sheridan in central Illinois, Freeman said.

Ziman was unable to explain why the felony conviction did not prevent Martin from obtaining a FOI card in the first place, merely saying it was possible that it would not have been discovered until the more rigorous CCW check. I'm living my worst nightmare. Police later killed Martin in a gun battle.

The plant, which manufactures water distribution products and operates as a factory and warehouse, employs about 200 workers in a working-class district of Aurora, the second-largest city in IL.

"As soon as I saw the green thing and heard the shots, we left", Probst said.

The Chicago Sun-Times newspaper reported his family as saying he was "stressed out" at being made redundant by the company, which makes valves for large water pipes. None of their wounds are considered life-threatening, Ziman said Saturday.

And the disgruntled coworker who brought a.40-caliber handgun to work the day he was sacked - a weapon that should've been seized years ago due to his criminal past, police say.

Trevor Wehner, 21, a human resources intern, was on his first day on the job at Henry Pratt when he was killed by a disgruntled employee who was being fired.

Another employee who was shot was being treated at a local hospital and was expected to recover.

According to Ziman, Martin began shooting at 1:24 p.m. Friday when he was sacked inside a meeting room at the Aurora industrial complex - fatally shooting three people inside the room.

Among the victims were Trevor Wehner, a human resources intern who was spending his first day at the company when he was fatally shot, police and a family friend said.

Frantic calls to 911 started pouring in from frightened workers at 1:24 p.m. and officers arrived at the scene within four minutes, authorities said.

Ziman said Martin was previously arrested by Aurora police officers on six different occasions, including for domestic violence and traffic incidents. Martin, who was convicted in 1995 of aggravated assault, was not licensed to own or carry a gun.

The other victims were Clayton Parks, Russell Beyer, Vicente Juarez and Josh Pinkard, they said.

"We will look at what we could have done differently in the days and weeks ahead", Hall said. She had just learned that the shooter lived close by and his unit in the complex had been taped off by police. He fired on an officer about an hour later and police fired back, killing him, authorities said.

Police in Aurora, Illinois, have responded to an active shooter situation at a manufacturing business, a police source told CNN. It was not immediately clear if Martin died from a self-inflicted wound or police gunfire.
