Ben Barba sacked by Cowboys

The development comes six years after Currie was forced to deny being assaulted by Barba when photos of facial injuries, believed to be hers, were published in a newspaper. However he says he was hamstrung by the evidence in front of him at the time.

The NRL appointed Tony Bannon QC to conduct an independent inquiry into the Bulldogs' handling of the 2013 incident and Greenberg was cleared of any wrongdoing. However, she was adamant the Dally M medalist never assaulted her.

Barba was set to line up for the Indigenous All-stars on February 15 against the New Zealand Maori All-stars side.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg on Saturday indicated he is considering handing Barba a life ban from the code if the allegations against him are proven.

"After an internal investigation, it has been determined that this player has acted in contradiction to both the terms and the spirit of that agreement today, North Queensland Cowboys terminated the playing contract of Ben Barba due to a significant breach of the terms of his contract". "I'll repeat again that violence against women is at the very top of that list", Greenberg told reporters.

Barba's torn-up one-year deal is also likely to fuel speculation of the club inquiring about National Football League hopeful Valentine Holmes for 2020 and beyond.

It is unclear whether police charges have been laid, however Townsville police are reportedly investigating the incident.

Six Nations - England 32-20 Ireland: Henry Slade reacts dominant win
He added, "We're nowhere near our best". "I am not saying it was a plan [by England] but it put him out of the game". Speaking after the thrilling encounter, Slade said: "It's a great feeling to get a win, Ireland are a top side".

"I think that's the type of leadership around our clubs that we continue to need and we will follow that suit obviously pending us seeing the same footage", Greenberg said.

"It's disgraceful and we can't stand around and do anything but protect the game".

"I called this out several weeks ago".

The Rugby League Players' Association will provide support to Barba and his family, but backed the NRL's stance."We fully support this decision if the allegations are correct and the strong stance the game is taking regarding violence against women", said RLPA CEO Ian Prendergast.

"We're going to get tougher, we're going to get tougher and get tougher on this sort of stuff because we must protect the game".
