In response to a cluster of five cases of measles in northwest Harris, Galveston and Montgomery counties, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is trying to raise awareness of the risk and the need for up-to-date vaccinations.

A case of measles was confirmed in Denton County on Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to seven. As a highly contagious infection, measles can live in an airspace where an infected person was for up to two hours.

Children should receive measles vaccination via one dose of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) between twelve to fifteen months of age, and another dose prior to entering school, between four to six years of age.

Officials said the recently diagnosed residents stayed home and limited contact with other people.

Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed up by flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread down throughout the body.

"To investigate to identify maybe where they went right away so that we can start notifying the public, you know, that these places you may have been exposed to measles", Christ said.

Infectious people were at Costco, the airport, a Blazers game and other sites.

The vast majority of Vancouver-area cases were not vaccinated against the virus.

The three Harris County patients are two boys younger than 2 and a woman who is between 25 and 35 years old. Three times as many people have gotten vaccinated in January - from 200 per day in 2018 to 600 per day in 2019.

"Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles", stated Dr. Matt Richardson, Director of Public Health.

To further limit the spread of the virus, health officials ask that people who think they might have measles call their doctor or health care provider before visiting a hospital or doctor's office.
