Couples, Stricker and Johnson to assist Woods at Presidents Cup

When Woods was named the captain of this year's US team, he made it clear he meant to lead and play for the American side in December at Royal Melbourne in Australia.

So said Fred Couples and Steve Stricker in a conference call with reporters Tuesday, when they along with Zach Johnson were named as three of Woods' captain's assistants for the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Dec. 9-15.

Oh, and Phil Mickelson, who just won again at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at 48?

The 14-time major champion tapped former captains Couples and Stricker, while injecting new blood to the leadership team in the shape of the former Open Championship and Masters victor Johnson for the December 12-15 event.

Couples has previously captained the USA to three Presidents Cup victories, while Stricker was in charge during their victory in 2017, and Johnson served as an assistant at last year's Ryder Cup. Following his victory at last year's Tour Championship, Woods taking on the role of a playing captain has become even more likely.

"Like Freddie says, we all expect him to be a part of the team as a player", Stricker said. "It will add another dimension for all of us to take probably some of the responsibility off of his plate".

He could be a contender for one of Wood's four captain's player picks if he does not automatically qualify in the top eight determined by FedEx Cup points.

Solar power best bet for the bank account
The heat is on in the NSW election campaign with both main parties promising a solar bonanza. This will include solar panels, solar hot water systems and energy storage batteries.

USA golfer Tiger Woods (R) leaves the 13th green with teammate Steve Stricker after sinking a birdie putt to win the hole during the afternoon four-ball round at the 39th Ryder Cup golf matches at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, September 29, 2012.

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are both likely to be in action for the USA team at Royal Melbourne. Ultimately, though, the International Team won 20.5-11.5.

Hale Irwin, who was the US captain in that inaugural event, also played for the American side, going 2-1-0.

Johnson played in four previous Presidents Cups, including 2015 in South Korea when he delivered a pivotal victory over Australian talisman Jason Day.

Woods could change all that come December.

"The fans in Australia really know their golf and create an unbelievable atmosphere for the players, so I'm excited to return and help this team win".
