De Sousa declared ineligible this season, and next

Kansas sophomore forward Silvio De Sousa must sit out the remainder of the 2018-19 season and the entire 2019-20 season, according to the NCAA, due to improper benefits received during recruiting. Under NCAA rules, a player is responsible for the actions of any third party acting on their behalf in a recruitment process, even if they are unaware of any wrongdoing by the third party.

Head coach Bill Self had harsh words for the NCAA.

The University acknowledged the violation in January to the NCAA so De Sousa could officially be ruled ineligible, which was followed with a request for his immediate reinstatement. If he wants to play college basketball again, he'll have to wait until his senior year.

Tompsett went on to say, "The NCAA's decision illustrates the absurdity of how the NCAA enforces its rules: A young man who did nothing wrong has had his life altered in a very negative way through no fault of his own. While we will continue to work with the NCAA on the broader matter, we have an obligation and a desire to advocate for our student-athletes, and will continue to do that for an outstanding young man." said Athletic Director Jeff Long.

De Sousa began playing mid-way through past year, and became a valuable reserve for the Jayhawks down the stretch last season. De Sousa had been practicing with the team, sitting on the bench for all games and attending classes while he awaited the NCAA's decision.

Own sourced copper sales, however, were some 22,000 tonnes lower than production, due to timing of shipments. Copper production met guidance, rising 11% to 1,453,753 tonnes from a year earlier.

"He did everything he was supposed to do and was asked to do to become an eligible student-athlete at the University of Kansas", Tompsett said.

Kansas was in need of frontcourt help from De Sousa after losing starting center Udoka Azubuike for the season in early January.

Months ago, Coach Self spoke shortly before a jury in federal court in NY convicted former Adidas executive James Gato, Adidas consultant Merl Code and National Basketball Association agent runner Christian Dawkins of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Former Arizona assistant Book Richardson, former USC assistant Tony Bland and former Oklahoma State assistant Lamont Evans also have pleaded guilty to various federal charges. Silvio is a tremendous young man who absolutely deserves to be on the court with his teammates. This process took way too long to address these issues. "The decision to withhold the 6'9" forward from competition came in October, after his eligibilty had to be reviewed following the testimony of Adidas consultant T.J. Gassnola during the FBI's investigation into college basketball corruption, which incriminated De Sousa's guardian.

Gassnola insisted that Self and the Jayhawks' staff did not know about the payments, though, and the Hall of Fame coach forcefully maintained De Sousa's innocence Friday night.
