Several luxury sports auto owners are counting the cost of Saturday's chaotic Yellow Vest protests in Paris after their pricey vehicles were targeted and torched by angry demonstrators.

As scuffles broke out in front of the National Assembly and French police responded with tear gas, paramedics huddled around the injured protester at the National Assembly gates.

One witness who filmed the incident, 21-year-old Cyprien Royer, said the victim was a yellow jacket photographer taking pictures of people trying to break down the barriers protecting the entrance to the National Assembly.

Large numbers of riot police patrolled the streets of the city, fired tear gas at protesters, and arrested at least one protester.

A "yellow vest" demonstrator lost his hand during clashes with police outside the main parliament building in Paris yesterday, witnesses told AFP, during a 13th weekend of anti-government protests across France.

Interior ministry figures put the turnout across France at 51,400, of whom 4,000 marched in Paris, slightly down on the previous week's figures.

Such vehicles have been a common sight in Paris since the deadly attacks by extremists in 2015.

"Every day the military ... protects our compatriots from the risk of terrorism. It wasn't pretty: he was screaming with pain, he had no fingers - he didn't have much above the wrist", he said. "These attacks are intolerable".

The French President was eventually forced to abandon the charge in a bid to quell the violence but ended up only firing up protestors keen on getting more concessions from the Government. Recent polls show Macron's approval ratings rising.

The activists waved Latvia's red-and-white flag, shouting slogans like "the French have woken up, while Latvians remain asleep".

The protests have brought hundreds of thousands of people out onto the streets all over France.

He said more than 60 MPs have received threats or had homes or offices vandalised since the start of the revolt in November, an unprecedented number in post-war France.
