Belgium will take in former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo following a request from the International Criminal Court which freed him from detention the previous day, Belgian news agency Belga said on Saturday.

Gbagbo and his former Minister for Sports and Youth Charles Blé were cleared of crimes against humanity charges last month for their alleged role in post-election violence in 2010 and 2011.

ICC appeals judges also ordered the conditional release of Ivory Coast's ex-president Laurent Gbagbo on Friday, more than two weeks after the two men were acquitted of involvement in deadly violence that erupted after their country's 2010 election.

Under the conditions of their release, Gbagbo and Goude must return to court if they are summoned, must turn in their passports and can not leave the country that agrees to house them.

Gbagbo's lawyers say he should be released without any conditions and free to return to Ivory Coast.

"It is impossible to limit the freedom of an innocent person", where there are no exceptional circumstances, chief defence lawyer Emmanuel Altit told the court.

Member states have now agreed to the proposition after a meeting between European Union ambassadors. The UK's ambassador to the EU, Sir Tim Barrow, objected to it at a meeting in Brussels earlier.

Atrocities were allegedly committed on both sides as the bloodshed turned Abidjan into a war zone and destabilised the African economic powerhouse, the world's largest cocoa-producing nation.

Gbagbo and Goude went on trial in January 2016.

Ivory Coast is an ICC member state, but the court may be unwilling to send Gbagbo to his homeland, given that it has refused to surrender Gbagbo's wife Simone despite an outstanding ICC warrant for her arrest.

Ble Goude has been in detention at the global court for almost five years.

Lawyers previously cited the arrangement reached with former Democratic Republic of the Congo vice president and rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba, who went to Belgium after he was cleared by the ICC past year.

In a statement later Friday, ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said that her team was still awaiting the judges' decision in writing, detailing the reasons for the two men's acquittal, before deciding whether to appeal.
