Former Oklahoma State standout Rickie Fowler closed with four straight birdies for a 6-under 65 on Friday, taking a one-shot lead over Justin Thomas into the weekend at the Phoenix Open.

Fowler opened with four birdies in six holes and navigated a hard two-putt on the par-4 18th hole to reach 20-under 193. He two-putted for birdie on the par-5 13th and made a five-foot birdie on 15 to reach 16 under.

He was able to edge out Byeong-hun An and Branden Grace for third-place (15 under) and a spot in the final group Sunday.

In an eventful third round of the new event in the Middle East, Li Haotong of China made four eagles, including two in his last two holes and three of them on par-4s, to share the lead with Dustin Johnson.

At the par-three 16th, where a raucous crowd of thousands surrounds the green, he rolled in a 10-footer. He hit his approach to two feet for birdie at No. 9, turning in 4-under 31, and followed a birdie at the hard 11th with a two-putt birdie on No. 13.

"I've done a good job of kind of everything this week, " Fowler said.

"To only have one bogey through 36 holes is good, especially when it very easily could have gone in for a par", who just missed his 10-footer for par at the hole. "I've been playing some nice golf. There's 18 holes left, a lot of work, but we're in a good spot". He also chipped in at the par-five 13th. An, who has yet to win on the PGA Tour, is in contention after shooting five-under 66. "I do my commentating for you", Miller said.

"I still wouldn't say it's ideal by any means, we still continue to work on stuff, but at least being in a good spot where things are starting to feel good, and I've done a good job of kind of everything this week". He's tied for fifth with Matt Kuchar.
