But half a century of heartache was forgotten when Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah clinched the doubles to give them an unassailable 3-0 lead over Sweden to jubilant scenes in Bogota.

The qualifiers are happening this weekend, with 24 teams competing for 12 spots in the Finals set for November.

Germany took a 2-0 lead over Hungary with ATP Finals victor Alexander Zverev, the only current top 10 player in action this weekend, beating Peter Nagy 6-2, 6-2 after Philipp Kohlschreiber had given them the lead in Frankfurt.

Denis Istomin partnered Sanjar Fayziev to a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Nikola Milojevic and Viktor Troicki in the doubles before he downed Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4 in the singles.

Third-ranked Alexander Zverev cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gabor Borsos in the first reverse singles as the countries opted to play out the remaining dead rubbers in Frankfurt.

The Australian team managed a 4-0 sweep of Bosnia and Herzegovina as John Millman, Alex De Minaur and Alexei Popyrin all won their singles matches in the absence of Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, whose long-running feud with coach Leyton Hewitt meant he was not involved.

The 19-year-old rewarded his captain's faith with a gutsy 6-1 7-6 (2) victory over Nerman Fatic in Adelaide.

Italy, which had led 2-0, overnight was forced to extend the encounter after Simone Bolelli and Matteo Berrettini lost to Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.

Yoshihito Nishioka thrashed Wu Yibing 6-2, 6-0 to level the tie after Gong Mao-Xin and Zhang Ze edged Ben McLachlan and Yasutaka Uchiyama 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

Elsewhere, Slovakia and Canada were 1-1 after Martin Klizan had a two-set win over Felix Auger-Aliassime to make up for Filip Horansky's 6-4, 7-5 loss to Denis Shapovalov.

The 2014 champions Switzerland, missing both Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka, fell 3-1 to Russian Federation.

It was left to Filip Krajinovic to mount a rescue, which the Serb duly did with a 4-6 6-3 6-0 win over Fayziev to send his team through.

China and Japan, who are meeting in the competition for the first time in 10 years, were also locked 1-1.

Unheralded Swiss duo Henri Laaksonen and Jerome Kym had kept their nation's hopes alive with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/1) win over Evgeny Donskoy and Andrey Rublev to trim Russia's lead to 2-1 in Biel.

Also making it into the finals were Belgium, 3-1 winners in Brazil, and Chile, who fought back from 2-1 down to topple Austria 3-2.

The teams will play a doubles rubber plus two reverse singles rubbers on Saturday.

Italy also led 2-0 against India in Kolkata and Kazakhstan claimed the first two points against Portugal, with Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kukushkin beating Joao Sousa and Pedro Sousa respectively.

They will join the four teams that contested the semis-finals a year ago - holders Croatia, finalists France, Spain and the United States - as well as wildcards Britain and Argentina, in the 18-team competition that has divided the tennis world.
