Google ends forced arbitration for its employees

Thousands of employees walked out of Google offices worldwide in November, including at the company's Mountain View headquarters, after a report from The New York Times detailed that three executives had received sizable payouts after leaving the company following accusations of sexual misconduct.

That's the alternative legal system often used to settle matters out of court. Last month, a group of Google employees took to Twitter and Instagram in an attempt to educate the public about forced arbitration.

Google stopped so-called forced arbitration in cases of sexual harassment and assault past year after 20,000 workers walked out to oppose how the search giant handles internal complaints. Protest organizers commended Google for Thursday's announcement, but wrote in a Medium post that they would not officially celebrate until the changes went live in employee agreements.

The company said Thursday that the change will take effect March 21 and will apply to current and future employees.

Wild rumour: Xbox Game Pass and cloud streaming coming to Nintendo Switch
Game Informer also states that its own sources suggest Game Pass for Nintendo Switch could even be announced later this year. Direct Feed Gaming also reported yesterday that Microsoft is bringing Ori and the Blind Forest and Xbox Game Pass to Switch.

In a December US Congressional hearing, Rep. Pramila Jayapal asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai to voluntarily commit to ending forced arbitration for all internal employee issues around discrimination, not just issues of sexual harassment.

At the moment, Google's employee contracts include forced arbitration clauses, as is the case with many companies. Google was aware of these concerns and it took the group's complaints into account when making the latest changes. Although some other tech companies, such as Adobe and Intuit, do not use force arbitration to settle claims, most tech companies in the U.S.do use the practice.

Google will likewise remove arbitration requirements for its extensive group of temps and contractual workers, in spite of the fact that the organization says it won't be able to control the policy that its workforce suppliers mandate on arbitration. However, there has surely been some progress, as some companies, including eBay, Airbnb, and Facebook have also ended forced arbitration. But it will not require vendors to change their own contracts.

"This victory never would have occurred if workers hadn't banded together, supported each other, and exited", the walkout organizers said in a tweet.
