The ritual - which sees a groundhog named Phil forecasting six more weeks of winter or an early spring depending on whether or not he sees his shadow - found global fame after featuring in the 1993 movie starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

Punxsutawney Phil has emerged from his hole and has made his yearly prediction.

Booker, a New Jersey Senator, tweeted: "The vicious attack on actor Jussie Smollett was an attempted modern-day lynching". The family also thanked the thousands who have stepped forward on social media to show Jussie love and support.

Spring is around the corner, according to members of Punxsutawney Phil's top hat-wearing inner circle, who revealed their forecast at sunrise on Saturday.

The early-Spring prediction is so rare that it has only happened 19 times in the 133-year history of Groundhog Day.

NOAA has said that Punxsutawney Phil has "no predictive skill," and looking back at the past 10 years, Phil's been accurate about 40 percent of the time.

If you're wondering how this little guy has been able to predict the weather for more than a century, there is an explanation. The legend of Punxsutawney Phil states that he drinks a magical "elixir of life" every year that adds an extra seven years to his lifespan with every sip.
