Brock Long, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), announced Thursday that he was resigning from his position, saying "it is time for me to go home to my family".

"I leave knowing the agency is in good hands", Long said. Jerry Brown, Paradise Mayor Jody Jones, President Donald Trump and FEMA Director Brock Long tour the Skyway Villa Mobile Home and RV Park in California.

Long said FEMA's No. 2 official, Pete Gaynor, would take over on a temporary basis when he departs.

"It has been a great honor to serve our country as FEMA Administrator for the past two years".

In a statement, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, whose agency houses FEMA, wrote of Long: "Under Brock's leadership, FEMA has successfully supported State and Territory-led efforts to respond and recover from 6 major hurricanes, 5 historic wildfires and dozens of other serious emergencies". Meanwhile wildfires caused a number of deaths in California. However, at the time Long denied that Nielsen had asked for his resignation.

China, Russia pose challenge to US space capabilities: Pentagon
China is building technologies that will soon threaten USA dominance in space, warned the Pentagon's lead intelligence agency. It adds that China 'possibly already has a limited capability to employ laser systems against satellite sensors'.

Long is one of several Trump administration officials to face scrutiny over his use of government resources.

A report by the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general said Mr Long would have to reimburse the government $151,000 (£117,000) related to costs of vehicles and staff involved in private trips, many of them between Washington and his home in North Carolina.

Last year, two strong hurricanes, Florence and Michael, hit the south-eastern US.

"We both understand what needs to be done", Long told the Post in September about his working relationship with Nielsen, "and we will continue to work together". Trump will nominate a permanent replacement for Long who will also have to be confirmed by the Senate, reported Fox News.
