Hong Kong police destroy WWI grenade found in potatoes

Hong Kong police have reportedly detonated a grenade they say was sent to a chip factory in a batch of French-grown potatoes.

He told the paper the bomb was securely detonated using a "high-pressure water firing technique", video of which the Hong Kong Police Force shared on Twitter on Saturday.

He added that the German-made device was thrown during World War I but did not explode then.

The grenade, described by authorities as having been caked with mud and dirt, was discovered by workers at a factory run by Japanese snack maker Calbee, South China Morning Post reported.

"All the information to date suggested that the grenade was imported from France together with the other potatoes", Superintendent Wong said.

Hong Kong police are used to dealing with old munitions, though more usually U.S. bombs dropped on the city after it fell to the invading Japanese during World War II.

It is not the first time Hong Kong police have dealt with old munitions. Two World War II bombs were found within the same week previous year, according the BBC.

The then-British colony was heavily bombed by USA and allied forces after the city fell to the Japanese imperial forces.
