Exercise has many benefits and has also been found to aid in the prevention of many health-related issues such as high blood pressure.

Athletes know a vigorous workout can release a flood of endorphins: "feel-good" hormones that boost mood.

Alzheimer's disease is estimated to affect almost 44 million people around the globe, according to the Alzheimer's Statistics website, which also suggests that only 1 in 4 patients get diagnosed.

This hormone, discovered only a few years ago, was at first believed to play a role simply in energy metabolism.

The hippocampus, an organ located within the brain's medial temporal lobe, is associated with learning and memory, particularly long-term memory.

Exercise could protect against Alzheimer's by triggering a hormone which helps regrow brain cells, a study has found. The researchers developed an optic probe that glows over 100 times more brightly when it detects fiber or fibrils of amyloid beta proteins; the concentrated light then oxidizes the fibers to prevent them from accumulating in the brain and affecting patient cognitive ability, and a specific binding site for the harmful proteins was identified which may pave the way for new drug treatments.

To study their hypothesis, the scientists chose to look at the levels of irisin in Alzheimer's patients.

Apple iPhone sales in China plunged 20% in 4Q
The smartphone users of brands like Apple is now contending with a plateauing global market after years of breakneck growth. Its shipments plummeted nearly 35% because of inventory corrections and an internal restructuring, IDC said.

They observed irisin in the hippocampus and reduced levels of the hormone in the region among patients with the neurodegenerative illness, the team found.

So, the researchers made a decision to explore irisin's effects on mice test subjects.

When irisin was disabled both those areas were weakened. In experiments initiated on mice, it was found that daily swimming activities lasting no less than five weeks inhibited the development of memory deficits, this was despite infusions of beta-amyloid, a protein linked to Alzheimer's. Impressively, the mice who swam almost every day did not have any memory loss despite the infusions.

The new evidence indicates that it may be behind the known positive effects on mental performance of taking exercise.

"I would certainly encourage everyone to exercise, to promote brain function and overall health", said Dr Ottavio Arancio, professor of pathology and cell biology and of medicine at Columbia University.

It suggests not only that exercise protects against dementia, but a drug which mimics irisin could prevent the disease.
