James Harden: Rockets star makes worrying injury claim after win over Mavericks

Hampered by a strained left shoulder, James Harden almost had his streak of consecutive 30-point games come to an end before coming alive down the stretch as the host Houston Rockets defeated the Dallas Mavericks 120-104 Monday.

He's now just one game from tying Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak of 30-point games in National Basketball Association history.

"I couldn't get the lift that I usually have for my shot, but that's no excuse", Harden said.

Wilt Chamberlain has the two longest 30-point streaks in the National Basketball Association at 31 games and 65 games. Chamberlain had such streaks of 65 and 31 games.

Next up for the Rockets is a road game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.

Harden, Paul, and Gordon finished a combined 15 of 40 on 3-pointers.

Harden revealed that his scoring streak wasn't on his mind late in the game.

Australia will reopen its Christmas Island detention centre
New Zealand Justice Minister Andrew Little told reporters in Wellington the decision to reopen Christmas Island was disappointing. The laws passed the Senate on Wednesday and will be given royal assent.

"I was anxious about winning", Harden explained.

Harden, who had eight rebounds and seven assists, seemed to be a bit slowed early by the strained left shoulder that he injured on Saturday against Oklahoma City, making just one of his first seven shots.

Houston hit back in the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 106-90, before the Mavs went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 106-97, with under four minutes remaining.and that's when Harden shut it down, reeling off back-to-back three-pointers as Houston went on a 9-3 run to put the result beyond doubt.

The Mavericks scored the next eight points, capped by a 3 from Finney-Smith just before the shot clocked expired, to get within 85-74 with 2 minutes left in the third.

"For sure, for sure", said Paul, who had 17 points and 11 assists.

The Rockets improved to 21-9 during Harden's streak, climbing from 14th to tied for fourth in the Western Conference standings during that span. Teammates admit that they're enjoying being a part of a historic run, but Harden often steers the discussion back to winning.

Harden has paced the Rockets in scoring in every game since December 1, a span of 35 contests. "At the end of the day, the name of the game is to win, and that's what we do".
