A Washington judge has hit the Syrian government with a US$302-million ($397-million) judgment over the 2012 death of journalist Marie Colvin, a long-time foreign correspondent for The Sunday Times.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the attack was "an extrajudicial killing" and that Marie Colvin "was specifically targeted because of her profession, for the objective of silencing those reporting on the growing opposition movement in the country".

"She was specifically targeted because of her profession, for the objective of silencing those reporting on the growing opposition movement in the country", Jackson wrote.

"This stands as a really stunning rebuke to autocratic governments around the world who have declared open season on journalists and opposition figures", Gilmore said. "The precedents show that it is possible to recover assets".

Lawyers for the family included as evidence a copy of an August 2011 fax that they said was sent from Syria's National Security Bureau instructing security bodies to launch military and intelligence campaigns against "those who tarnish the image of Syria in foreign media and worldwide organizations".

"By perpetrating a directed attack against the Media Center, Syria meant to intimidate journalists, inhibit newsgathering and the dissemination of information, and suppress dissent", Jackson wrote. That night, Colvin had given live interviews to CNN and two British broadcasters, the BBC and Channel 4.

One-month-old leopard cub seized from passenger's bag at Chennai airport
Customs officials on Saturday morning seized a leopard cub from a passenger who arrived from Thailand at Chennai airport . Moideen allegedly brought the cub in his checked-in luggage, reported The Times of India .

As NPR's Deborah Amos reported in April, key testimony in the case came from a Syrian defector who had been a high-ranking intelligence officer, who recounted the how the attack was planned and executed. The Syrian government was not involved in defending the case.

The civil lawsuit was filed by Colvin's family in 2016.

Colvin was a war journalist that spent her career across many areas, including Iraq, Chechnya, the Balkans, East Timor, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, and Libya.

Colvin was on assignment for the newspaper alongside photographer Paul Conroy, played in the film by Jamie Dornan, who escaped with a leg injury. The group's executive director, Dixon Osburn, said the lawsuit was the first seeking to hold the Assad government liable for war crimes. "They prioritised taking out the journalists".

Within an announcement published through her legal representatives, Colvin's sibling, Cathleen Colvin pointed out, "It's been nearly seven years since my sister was killed by the Assad Regime, and not a day goes by when I don't think of her.". But she hopes it will at least be a long-term inconvenience and embarrassment to Assad's government.

"I don't have any illusions that this will have any effect on Assad's life", she said.
