Mental health issues affecting one in seven kids in the U.S

Of the 46.6 million kids ages 6 by 18 whose mother and father accomplished the study, 7.7 million had not less than one psychological health situation resembling despair, anxiousness or consideration-deficit/hyperactivity dysfunction and exclusively half obtained therapy or counseling from a mental health supplier within the 12 months previous to the survey.

Researchers looking at data from a survey of almost 50 million kids, ages six through 18, filled out by their parents, found that 7.7 million children had at least one mental health condition. There were cases of depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorders etc.

"When a child or teen is struggling with a mental health crisis or needs specialized emotional supports, they need help as quickly as possible", said Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health, in a media release Monday morning. In Hawaii, for instance, 7.6% of youngsters had one of many conditions, in contrast with 27.2% in Maine.

And there's a severe shortage of mental health providers who treat children and adolescents.

If anything, the current study probably underestimates the scope of the problem, said Katherine Lamparyk, a paediatric psychologist at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital in OH who wasn't involved in the study. This finding however did not surprise child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists.

There are a number of difficulties and challenges for children and their families when it comes to accessing mental health services, explained Jennifer Mautone, psychologist in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Of these again, only around half received treatment or counselling from a qualified mental health provider in the year prior to the survey.

The next big issue is insurance coverage, Robles-Ramamurthy said. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry also cites the problems of availability of practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists (less than 17 available per 100,000 children).

Parents responded to a prompt: "Has a doctor or other health care provider EVER told you that this child has" a mental health disorder.

Families are facing longer wait times, which can lead to worsening of the mental health condition in the child and a need for more treatment sessions than if the condition had been addressed in its early stages, Mautone explained. Mautone said in her statement, "All of these systems that are supposed to be caring for children often times are not talking to each other".

A few states stood out for having high proportions of children with mental health disorders and high proportions of untreated kids: Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Utah.
