Michael Cohen To Accuse Trump Of Criminal Activity

Cohen, Trump's former longtime personal attorney, is testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee behind closed doors Tuesday.

Earlier this year, Cohen said he arranged hush money payments to Stormy Daniels, left, and Karen McDougal, former Playboy Playmate of the Year, who have both alleged they had sexual encounters with Trump.

Part of the effort is distributing a video titled "Have Fun in Prison!" that includes clips of Cohen previously vouching for Trump during the presidential campaign.

As Special Counsel Robert Mueller appears to be near the end of his probe into whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election in collusion with Trump's campaign, Cohen's assertion that Trump was inquiring about the skyscraper project as late as June 2016, if true, would show Trump remained personally engaged in the venture well into his candidacy.

Cohen will testify behind closed doors before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, in public before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, and will go behind closed doors again on Thursday with the House Intelligence Committee.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders attempted to discredit Cohen in a statement on Tuesday, calling him a "disgraced felon", "laughable" and "pathetic".

Cohen's open testimony on Wednesday could well overshadow the first day of talks over North Korea's nuclear weapons between Trump and Kim.

Democrat Elijah Cummings, chair of the Oversight Committee, said last week lawmakers would question Cohen about Mr Trump's possible conflicts of interest and finances.

Reporters have obtained documents from the committee, confirming the news.

Cohen's testimony has been a long time in coming.

Republicans have been blasting away at Cohen's credibility, offering reminders that he pleaded guilty previous year to lying to Congress.

The 52-year-old was convicted last year by NY federal prosecutors of campaign finance violations and tax evasion and by special counsel Robert Mueller of lying to Congress about Trump Organization plans in Moscow.

"It sure seems like you're threatening Michael Cohen that if he testifies before Congress you, or people aligned with you, will bring out embarrassing details about him", White wrote.

Michael Cohen won't be anyone's legal representative for a while, and not just because of his upcoming prison sentence.

Critics noted that the tweet sounded a lot like Trump's own threats to Cohen, which many argued were clear instances of witness intimidation - a federal crime.

Trump blamed Cohen for mishandling the payments.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff postponed Cohen's appearance before that committee saying it was "in the interests of the investigation", with no additional details.
