Michigan Basketball: 3 takeaways from brutal loss at Iowa

For the second time this season, MI went on the road to an upper-half Big Ten team and left with a loss as the students rushed the floor.

Iowa's big run started with an easy Cook bucket on a post iso against Austin Davis, and backup big man Ryan Kriener knocked down a three to tie the game on a miscommunicated Iggy - Davis switch. Two coaches were headed in opposite directions, but Beilein saw the reversal for McCaffery coming.

Coach Fran McCaffery credited a veteran team that's maturing for its resiliency. "Which was a really classy thing to say".

The team couldn't bounce back against Minnesota, falling 92-87 on Sunday.

So, Iowa's 74-59 win over the fifth-ranked Hawkeyes on Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena was exactly what Beilein thought could happen. "And that's what you need if you're going to beat Michigan", McCaffery said. "I saw it coming previous year".

"I can see why they're 17-5 right now", MI coach John Beilein said about Iowa.

Michigan, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, had allowed an average of 56.1 points per game. The Hawkeyes roared past that, scoring the most points of any Big Ten team against the Wolverines this season.

The Wolverines also shot 32.1 percent, their worst game of the season. They were puzzled by the chemistry of various zone defenses of the Hawkeyes.

It's why Beilein and his team could only walk away from the post-game court-storming that morphed into an impromptu dance party with the Hawkeyes right in the middle. The difference? Michigan State won in Iowa City, crushing the Hawks 82-67, and Michigan didn't.

"Nah", Kriener said. "It was fun".

Over on the Iowa side, they're 16-5 this season.

If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she's grown to love. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships.

Twenty-two games in, Iowa doesn't have a "bad loss". Entering the game, the Hawkeyes had the worst defense in Big Ten play, but they held MI to 0.81 points per possession - which was nearly exactly the same Wolverine output in their loss to Wisconsin. The best teams bring it most nights.

"I'm a realist", McCaffery said.

It's something Iowa struggled with the last two seasons.

The, um, worserer news for Michigan is that the team replacing them as a No. 1 seed is in-state rival Michigan State. "This how we've got to play every night". "We really focused in on the defensive end and just played really hard and got after it", Garza said. "It was good to get a taste of that".

In the loss to the Gophers, Iowa's Luka Garza led the team with 25 points, three rebounds and one assist. First, Zaiver Simpson got the Wolverines within 10 at 43-33, before a 7-2 Hawkeye run pushed the lead back to 15. It entered Friday on a two-game skid, and responded again.

"Personally", he said, "I needed this". He was 6-of-9 from the field, a stunning mismatch for a team known for its defense. I can see why they're 17-5.

The Hawkeyes are learning.

Iowa's quality offense scored efficiently in the first half (though they wound up having just an average game), but their normally poor defense had a great performance against MI.

In this game, after MI closed to within 54-49, the Hawkeyes went on an 11-2 burst, with eight of those points coming from Garza. The Wolverines were limited to 54 points in that one, and just 0.82 per possession, then returned to Ann Arbor and had a big scare when they blew a double-digit lead to Minnesota and needed a Charles Matthews buzzer beater to escape with a 59-57 win. "But we withheld it". They (were) much better than us. "And so we can enjoy this for a very short period of time, go back to work, get ready for the next one".

The party at mid-court had long since broken up when Beilein kept saying what he had been saying all along. You lose to Minnesota on the road; they're a really good team. You beat Penn State on the road; they're a really good team.

With that, they showed the toughness necessary to beat the top teams in this league. "They're a great team". "I think we have a good team". I think we recognize that.
