The 2019 BMW 7-Series line-up has just been spruced up with the addition of two new nature-friendly plug-in hybrid versions, which will go on sale in Europe in Spring 2019.

The 745Le xDrive's plug-in hybrid system comprises a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and a "further advanced" 12,0 kWh high-voltage battery with enlarged capacity. It offers a total electric range of 54-58 km (33-36 miles) for the 745e (52-55 km for the 745 Le and 50-54 km for the 745Le xDrive). Driving in hybrid mode, both models are capable of travelling up to 68mph and the petrol engine is said not to kick in until the vehicle reaches higher speeds or is under heavy acceleration. The engine kicks-in only on speeds beyond this figure or if the system senses that the auto is carrying a heavier-than-usual load. Nonetheless, efficiency improved: the new BMW 745e has a combined fuel consumption of 2.3 to 2.1 l/100 km, a combined power consumption of 15.6 to 15.1 kWh/100 km and Carbon dioxide emissions of 52 to 48 g/km.

For the first time, the plug-in hybrid variants are available with the standard of an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, offering even quicker gear changes and the benefit of shift paddles on the steering wheel.

BMW have made efforts with the integration of this system to minimise impact on internal space and storage.

To aid weight distribution and practicality, the battery is positioned underneath the rear seats, while the 46-litre fuel tank is located above the rear axle.

Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek says working with Bryan Singer was ‘not pleasant’
He added - reportedly whilst visibly emotional: "For anyone who is seeking any solace in all of this, Bryan Singer was sacked ". Bryan Singer was sacked , I don't think that was something anyone saw coming but I think that had to happen and it did'.

Interior fittings are just as luxurious as on any other models in the updated BMW 7 Series range, with the only visible difference for passengers being a slightly smaller load bay and bespoke hybrid instrument panel. This mode is for purely electrically powered driving, ideal for urban areas, while a distinctive sound created especially for electrified BMW models is used for acoustic pedestrian protection, emitted via a speaker system.

In SPORT mode, the electric motor is not used on its own, but exclusively in support of the combustion engine. This is especially useful if you have to cross emission-free-only zones, so you will use the internal combustion engine on the motorway (when it's extremely efficient) and switch to ELECTRIC once reaching the city.

When charging the battery, the driver can see all the relevant information in the instrument panel, such as charge level and duration, charging current, now available electrical range and the chosen conditioning level.

When selecting a public charging station, the sat-nav will provide a list of recommended nearby hotels, restaurants, cafés and tourist attractions, along with a charging station occupancy forecast.

Sales for the plug-in model start in the Spring, with the 745e costing £76,815 and the 745Le xDrive starting from £83,560.
