A witness said he had encountered a woman with a baby just minutes before the infant was found who had begged him to take the child, United States outlet ABC News reported.

Initially, he thought it was some kind of animal before realising it was a baby girl.

A newborn baby girl was found alone, lying in a California road during freezing temperatures early Monday morning.

Aurelio Fuentes Jr., a newspaper carrier for The Fresno Bee, told the publication that he was glad he was driving slowly and had the radio volume down, as he was able to hear the infant before he spotted it and got out of his vehicle to investigate. "The newborn was discovered dressed only in a soiled onesie in weather just below 30 degrees". "There could've been coyotes, there's cars going by fast down that road", Mr Fuentes said.

Fuentes called authorities and the baby girl was rushed to a hospital.

The newborn, who was only hours old, was rushed to Valley Children's Hospital and is now being treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Smollett told authorities he was on the phone with his manager when he was attacked. The actor said he was on the phone with Moore at the time of the ambush.

Now authorities are on the hunt for the baby's mother.

The child will be placed in the care of child protective services when she is fully recovered.

The woman was described as a "Hispanic female adult, possibly in her 20s".

Law enforcement is asking for the public's help in locating the birth mother who left the baby in the middle of the road about halfway between Roads 35 and 36.

The witness told her to take the newborn to a nearby fire station or hospital and left the area a few moments before the newspaper carrier arrived.

Pogue said the situation was inexplicable and also noted that any newborn infants can be safely surrendered at any designated "safe surrender site" - a fire station or hospital - without any questions asked or the mother facing any charges.
