Nigerian presidential candidates urge for calm after election is postponed

Nigerian police guard the entrance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party headquarters where Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari holds an emergency meeting with senior members of the party in Abuja, Nigeria, Monday Feb. 18, 2019.

Foreign election observers have appealed for calm following the last-minute postponement of the Nigerian election by a week. One of them stated.

An electoral worker takes stock of ballot papers to be transported at the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Yola, Nigeria, on Friday.

Places that had been served with the materials were to return them to the central bank following which an audit was to be done on them, INEC said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission's delay marked the third consecutive time that Nigeria has postponed a nationwide vote.

According to the APC National Chairman, the PDP was given prior notice of the postponement of the elections. However, the House Speaker described APC National Chairman's comment as mischievous and inflammatory.

The president's order comes as Nigerians prepare to vote at the rescheduled general elections starting on Saturday. "After the election we have to know exactly what really happened", he said, promising that an investigation would be launched. A party spokesperson in Delta state in the restive south said the commission "has destroyed the soul of Nigeria with this act".

Hajiya Sa'adatu said she was "greatly disappointed" to learn of the delay when she came out to cast her vote in the northern city of Kano.

While most Nigerians took the delay in a presidential election in their stride on Sunday, after similar postponements in 2011 and 2015, one presidential candidate and civil society groups expressed concern that the vote could now be compromised.

"I am not happy with the suspension".

The future of Africa's most populous nation and largest economy is at stake.

President Muhammadu Buhari's campaign spokesman Festus Keyamo for the APC said the news was a "huge disappointment" and hit out at INEC for being unprepared.
