One-month-old leopard cub seized from passenger's bag at Chennai airport

Customs officials on Saturday morning seized a leopard cub from a passenger who arrived from Thailand at Chennai airport. Moideen allegedly brought the cub in his checked-in luggage, reported The Times of India.

Based on intelligence inputs that said prohibited wild animals may be smuggled from Thailand, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) had been maintaining a vigil at the Customs arrival hall. The officials were further alerted by the hurried manner in which he was walking, soon after he had picked up his checked-in luggage. Authorities opened his bag for further examination since Kaja was evasive in his replies to them.

'The animal was in a state of shock and was making trill sounds and appeared to be weak, ' he said. It was given milk using a feeding bottle by customs officers.

Officials of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) were called and they identified the animal as leopard cub of "Pantherapardus" species.

The Cub will be rehabilitated in the Aringar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai and the forest department will take appropriate action under Wild Life Protection Act 1972 against the passenger.

The little cub was later moved by wildlife officials to a zoological park.

Officials said they grew suspicious after hearing sounds coming from the bag, and stopped the passenger as he tried to rush out of the terminal in the capital city of southern Tamil Nadu state.
