The blaze broke out in an eight-storey block in the 16 arrondissement of the French capital.

Described by firefighters as a "scene of incredible violence", the blaze started at about 1:00 am (0000 GMT).

The fire spread across the two floors of the building on Monday night, forcing some residents to scramble onto nearby rooftops to escape the flames and smoke.

The cause of the fire is unknown. With multiple landmarks including the Trocadero overlooking the Eiffel Tower and an array of upmarket shops and restaurants, the area is popular with tourists, the news agency reported.

Firefighters were still searching for other victims and working to extinguish the blaze, according to spokesman Clement Cognon of the city fire service.

Meet the President And First Lady's State of the Union Guests
For the most part, President Donald Trump's guests to Tuesday's State of the Union address are predictable. To be clear, bullying is a serious issue, and no child should have to go through it.

More than 200 firefighters and emergency workers are on the scene, Paris police said, and the street is blocked off.

At approximately 5 am, fire crews had finished evacuating the block on rue Erlanger but were still fighting the flames.

People in neighbouring buildings were also evacuated.

Twenty four people, including two firefighters, were left injured from this morning's fire.
