That should result in a 0-60mph time of well under five seconds. The sedan is outfitted with dual electric motors - one per axle - that, together with its 78 kWh battery, produces 300 kW (408 horsepower) and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft of torque).

Described as a 'premium five-door fastback, ' the 2 has a vaguely Saab-ish profile.

That's slower from a standstill but with a range equal to the Tesla's.

The Polestar 2 will start at 39,900 euros (~$45,400 USD), though there will be a launch edition during the first year of production starting at a whopping 59,900 euros (~$68,200). The performance version of the Model 3, which has a reduced range of 530km but quicker acceleration and a higher top speed, is priced at 66,100 euros (see comparison chart, below, right). Polestar's first vehicle, the Polestar 1 two-door coupe, is a pricier plug-in hybrid luxury coupe going on sale later this year.

Other unique features will include the new Pixel LED headlights (not available in the United States due to legislation), a proximity lighting feature that gives the owner a welcome sequence, frameless side mirrors and more.

Now, Polestar is a brand of its own, one that will specialize in electrified performance vehicles. It also includes gold brake calipers, seat belts and valve caps.

If you're interested in pre-ordering the Polestar 2, you'll need a $1,500 CAD deposit.

The car's infotainment systems are powered by Android OS, meaning services like Google Assistant, Google Maps with support for electric vehicles and the Google Play Store comes as embedded features. The Polestar 2's interior is spartan, but not as stark as the Model 3's minimalist dashboard.

On Wednesday, Volvo's performance brand debuted its first all-electric auto, the Polestar 2.

Driving range should be around 310 miles courtesy of a 78kWh battery pack that also acts as a stressed member of the chassis and a sort of damper for some of the noise, vibration and harshness that wheeled road travel creates.

Ingenlath said he expected Asia, North America and Europe to each account for roughly a third of sales, though China would be slightly larger. The Polestar Production Center will not only be close to battery suppliers, but also lands squarely in the automotive market that is most aggressively pursuing the transition to electric vehicles.

It follows the Polestar 1 hybrid coupe and precedes a Polestar 3 electric SUV anticipated by 2021.

Polestar's chief executive told Reuters he hoped to sell "north of" 50,000 Polestar 2s annually within two or three years after deliveries start from the first half of 2020, but said how much production capacity the company sets up would depend on market conditions.
