Profit for Sony's gaming business dropped 14%, down to 73.1 billion yen, in the company's third quarter which ended in December compared to the same period past year, thanks to a significant slowdown of PlayStation 4 sales, the company reported Friday.

Sales of PlayStation 4 consoles dipped by 900,000 In Q4, from 9 million to 8.1 million.

Despite the slowing sales number, however, Sony execs are still happy with how the PS4 is getting along.

Incidentally, today's numbers confirm that PS4 is the console platform that achieved the most shipments in 2018.

RCom tanks over 48%; other group shares crash too
The beleaguered company also found it hard to bring about an agreement among the lenders over the debt resolution plan . The latest blow for Rcom was the failure of the plan to sell assets worth Rs 18,000 crore owing to legal hurdles.

This means that 94.2 units of the console have been shipped (sold-in to retailers) by December 31.

However, when you look at the company's previous two console release dates (PS4 on November 15, 2013, and PS3 on November 11, 2006) it seems like Sony now favours a release just in time for the Christmas shopping rush. First, and third-party content amounted to 87.2 million units, 37% of which was made digitally. By contrast, the PS4 is outperforming the PS2, having sold a total of 91.6 million units since its November 2013 debut.

The performance of the Game & Network Services business, which includes PlayStation and PlayStation Network shows a significant increase in sales year-on-year mostly due to an increase in software sales, partly offset by a decrease in hardware sales and Holiday season promotional prices. Given that the Sony PS4 is now headed into its sixth consecutive year on the market, this is hardly surprisingly. This allows games for previous generation consoles to run on the new one, thinking it's still running with familiar hardware. Even if this past holiday season saw shipments dip by almost 1 million, the past quarter is still nothing to scoff at whatsoever.
