Saudi Arabia has announced that Princess Reema bint Bandar al-Saud will become its next ambassador to the U.S. - the first woman ever to take on an envoy role for the kingdom.

The appointment of Princess Reema appeared to be aimed at turning a new page after the killing of Mr Khashoggi, who lived in Virginia and was a columnist for The Washington Post, while also emphasising the kingdom's social reforms in the capital of its most important ally.

Bint Bandar, who was born in 1975, holds a BA degree in Museum Studies with an academic focus on the preservation of historical monuments, from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Recently, the World Economic Forum appointed her to its Young Global Leaders program.

I have had constructive discussions with King Salman of Saudi Arabia, the Amir of Kuwait, Prime Minister Hariri of Lebanon and others, on issues such as migration, the crises in Yemen and Syria, instability in Libya, the evolving threat from Daesh, and the Middle East Peace Process.

USA lawmakers have threatened to take tougher action against Saudi Arabia over the brutal killing amid claims that the crown prince was personally responsible.

Deputy Minister of Defense Prince Khalid Bin Salman, in his first mission as Deputy Minister of Defense, conveyed the greetings of the Saudi leadership to the men of the armed forces stationed at the southern border, Saudi Press Agency said.

She is also a founding member of the Zahra Breast Cancer Awareness Association.

After giving conflicting explanations of what happened, the Kingdom eventually admitted Khashoggi, who was once a Royal insider, was murdered after entering the country's consulate in Istanbul previous year. She has worked in the kingdom to expand opportunities for women in a nation that has historically downgraded the role of women in society.

Shihabi said Prince Khalid will virtually have the same authority as the defence minister, shouldering some of the burden on the crown prince. The Saudi Embassy in Washington has denied the call took place.

Bint Bandar entered the political and diplomatic arena through the business and financial portal, being a member of a number of local and worldwide advisory councils, including the Advisory Board of the Saudi National Initiative for Creativity, the Global Advisory Council of Ober and the TEDx Conference Advisory Council.

Princess Reema's appointment is a public relations move, to be sure.

Earlier this month, a panel of British MPs and lawyers investigating the detention of women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia has concluded that their treatment may constitute torture under Saudi and worldwide law.

In a speech to Tory activists the PM said, as her negotiations with the European Union reach their final stages, the "worst thing we could do is lose our focus".
