Sentencing hearing to begin for serial killer Bruce McArthur

Prosecutor Michael Cantlon said McArthur would later access some of the photos long after the killings.

Toronto is reeling from allegations that McArthur systematically targeted men in the gay community.

Prosecutors also say that a ninth possible victim was found bound and naked in McArthur's house when he was arrested in January 2018.

Canton said photographs discovered on McArthur's digital devices contained images of many of his victims, both alive and dead.

The court also heard that McArthur was likely moments away from murdering a ninth man from when police moved in to arrest him.

Cantlon said Kinsman's disappearance is what led police to a break in the case. The man, who survived, was identified only as Middle Eastern and named "John".

A sentencing hearing for the 67-year-old revealed officers who stormed his apartment found a man lying bound to McArthur's bed.

McArthur's assault on the victim was interrupted by police who were surveilling the suspected murderer. Ontario Superior Court Justice John McMahon will decide whether McArthur will serve his sentences concurrently or consecutively.

McArthur's sentencing hearing is scheduled for three days this week.

The disturbing photos, which were not shown in court, showed McArthur's victims unconscious and naked.

But it was the disappearance of popular gay activist Andrew Kinsman in June 2017 that provided key evidence police needed to nail serial killer Bruce McArthur.

The men were murdered between 2010 and 2017 and their dismembered bodies were found on a property in Leaside where McArthur stored tools for his landscaping business.

"The social features of the victims also overlapped".

However, the floodgates opened once Burns was sent back by Holder and the 35-run opening stand came to an end. Holder missed the tour due to a shoulder injury, but was kept apprised of things.

Cantlon said McArthur had met John through an online dating app in the summer of 2017, roughly five years after the man had immigrated to Canada from an unspecified Middle-Eastern country.

"Some were forced to live parts of their life in secret because of their orientation". Numerous victims, for instance, had to hide their sexuality from family members or contend with unstable housing situations, he said.

Another was a refugee who was ordered deported.

Seven members of Toronto's LGBTQ community had gone missing without a trace over a seven-year period.

McArthur - who has admitted to the murders of Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi and Kirushna Kanagaratnam - will not be eligible for parole for 25 years.

Cantlon said most of the killings were facilitated under the pretense of sex. He said McArthur repeatedly strangled his victims with rope. He also held onto items belonging to them.

Wearing a black cable-knit sweater and plaid collared shirt, McArthur sat hunched in the dock of a Toronto courtroom, as the court heard a detailed statement of facts presented by the crown.

The man escaped and called police. "He was unable to swallow properly again for a week", Cantlon said.

In 2003, McArthur was convicted of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon for bashing a man on the head with a metal bar, causing bleeding and a cut that required stitches.

By then he had committed three of the eight murders undetected.

Cantlon said McArthur has shown some remorse by pleading guilty to the charges. Days before, investigators had even surreptitiously searched McArthur's apartment for evidence.

"However, that's little consolation to the void he's created", Healey said.
