Spain's Sergio Garcia was disqualified from the inaugural $5 million Saudi International on Saturday for serious misconduct.

Garcia apologized in a statement posted on the European Tour website.

'I respect the decision of my disqualification, ' he said. "In frustration, I damaged a couple of greens, for which I apologise for, and I have informed my fellow players it will never happen again", said Garcia.

Garcia thus became the first player on the European Tour to be disqualified under Rule 1.2a, which deals with conduct expected from players. The world No. 3 and Li were 16 under overall and five strokes ahead of Tom Lewis, who shot 62 for third outright.

Earlier in the week he had spoken sensibly about how players should know the Rules of Golf or run the risk of learning the hard way, as he did when losing a tournament in Australia early in his professional career after taking a wrong drop.

Brisbane airport evacuated due to emergency situation
There are unconfirmed reports of a man with knives in the terminal and the threat of a bomb. Brisbane Airport has been evacuated as emergency crews respond to an "emergency incident".

Struggling at around level par, Garcia's renowned rage got the better of him as he slammed his club into the putting surfaces on multiple occasions.

Dustin Johnson is expecting a hard final-round duel against China's Haotong Li after he produced four eagles on Saturday to catch the American at the top of the inaugural Saudi International.

"Very lucky today", the 23-year-old Chinese player said.

The 38-year-old, victor of last week's Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on the PGA Tour, shot a two-over-par 72 and failed to make it to the weekend by two shots.

One of the world's most popular golfers was disqualified from an even this weekend on the European Tour. "Haotong is a good player and he's been playing well".
