Referee Damir Skomina left shows a yellow card to Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos centre against Ajax

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has been charged by UEFA for receiving a yellow card on goal during the Champions League match against Ajax in order to serve a suspension before the quarter-finals.

The Spain worldwide was booked in the 89th minute of his side's 2-1 victory in Amsterdam, which means he is suspended for the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu on March 5.

The European football body said its disciplinary panel will judge the case on Thursday (Friday NZT).

Ramos suggested in an interview after the match that he had been booked intentionally so as to avoid the risk of a suspension in the quarter-finals, although he later backtracked on those comments.

However, a player who is found to have obtained a booking deliberately can be banned for two games.

Ramos, however, later used social media to stress it had not been intentional to collect a caution, referring instead to purposefully giving away a free-kick to prevent an Ajax equaliser.

The 32-year-old Ramos said the day after the match that he did not "force the card".

However, he could now miss a further two games for his actions.

"The truth is that given the result I'd be lying if I said it wasn't something I had in mind", Ramos had said.

Sergio Ramos has been charged by UEFA for "receiving a yellow card on objective".

"It is not to underestimate the opponent but sometimes there is a time to make decisions and I have done so".

That foul triggered a one-game ban to be served in the second leg at home, where Madrid is heavily favoured.
