Trump administration unveils order to prioritise and promote AI

In May, a top White House technology official, Michael Kratsios, assured participants from more than 100 companies across several sectors of the economy that the administration would pursue a hands-off regulatory approach to AI to allow it to grow unfettered.

"This initiative will devote the full resources of the federal government to develop AI", a senior administration official told reporters Sunday, according to The Hill.

"Continued American leadership in Artificial Intelligence is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States", Trump said.

But so far, New Zealand is behind other countries in encouraging AI, and creating an ethical framework, Callaghan boss Victoria Crone says.

Under the American AI Initiative, the administration will direct agencies to prioritize AI investments in research and development, increase access to federal data and models for that research and prepare workers to adapt to the era of AI.

"Maintaining American leadership in AI requires a concerted effort to promote advancements in technology and innovation, while protecting American technology, economic and national security, civil liberties, privacy, and American values and enhancing global and industry collaboration with foreign partners and allies", the Monday executive order reads.

She was the chief of staff for former Defense Secretary Ash Carter.
