He told MPs that the step was never taken lightly, adding: 'But when someone turns their back on the fundamental values and supports terror, they don't have an automatic right to return to the UK.

The British Nationality Act 1981 provides the Home Secretary with the power to take such action if it is "conducive to the public good". Since 2010, it has been used about 150 times for people linked to terrorism or serious crimes. "And why does it seem to depend on other foreign nationality laws whether or not someone remains British?"

An individual can be deprived of British citizenship only where it will not leave that individual stateless, where they are a dual national or, in some limited circumstances, where they have the right to citizenship elsewhere.

"Deprivation is a powerful tool that can be used only to keep the most unsafe individuals out of this country, and we do not use it lightly".

He told parliament that any decision he made on citizenship deprivation was "legally proper and correct".

'Bangladesh asserts that Ms Shamima Begum is not a Bangladeshi citizen.

Earlier, a Home Office spokesperson said that the home secretary's priority is "the safety and security of Britain and the people who live here", adding that Sajid Javid has "the power to deprive someone of their British citizenship where it would not render them stateless". "So there is no question of her being allowed to enter Bangladesh".

However the legal basis for this statement is unclear.

It has now emerged she is not a Bangladeshi citizen and there is "no question" of her being allowed into Bangladesh.

In 2017, the government lost an appeal case brought by two British citizens of Bangladeshi origin who were stripped of their citizenship when they were overseas.

The UK, however, is moving to strip her of her British citizenship.

Grits defeat call for public inquiry into SNC-Lavalin
Liberal MP Jody Wilson-Raybould arrives to a caucus meeting on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it's important there be an "airing" of what happened in the SNC-Lavalin affair.

"I wasn't born in Bangladesh, I've never seen Bangladesh and I don't even speak Bengali properly, so how can they claim I have Bangladeshi citizenship", she said.

She went on to say she may try for citizenship in the Netherlands, where her husband is from.

"Maybe I can ask for citizenship in Holland", Begum added. "If he gets sent back to prison in Holland I can just wait for him while he is in prison", Begum told ITV.

Begum is now in a refugee camp in northeast Syria where she fled to escape fighting in the east of the country along with hundreds of other people with links to IS.

Begum said in recent media interviews that Abase had stayed in a village where IS fighters were making a final stand against US-backed forces.

Begum gave birth to her son on the weekend in a Syrian refugee camp.

She said she has previously given birth to two other children after marrying in Syria.

However, the teenager confirmed several times that she knew about beheadings conducted by Daesh, but said that she was "okay with it".

The 19-year-old said she had hoped the United Kingdom would understand she made a "very big mistake" by joining IS. I don't think they are allowed to do that.

In a statement on Twitter, the family's lawyer Tasnime Akunjee said they were "very [disappointed] with the Home Office's intention to have an order made depriving Shamima of her citizenship". "We can use the full force of the criminal law - we must - and the full resources of the intelligence services once these people have got back here".
