Vet Who Smuggled Drugs to U.S. in Puppies Sent to Prison

A Colombian veterinarian who surgically implanted heroin in the bodies of live puppies to smuggle the drug in the United States received his sentence in a New York City courtroom Wednesday.

In 2015 he was arrested in Spain and was brought to the United States to face drug-smuggling charges.

According to prosecutors, between 2004 and 2005 Elorez leased a farm in Medellin, Colombia, where he reared dogs and sewed bags of liquid heroin into nine puppies for importation to the United States.

Then these balls were taken out "surgically".

On Jan. 1, 2005, law enforcement searched the farm and seized 17 bags of liquid heroin, including 10 bags that were removed from puppies.

The 39-year-old vet conducted the surgeries under the direction of Colombian drug traffickers wanting to smuggle the illegal substance into the US. Now he will spend 6 years behind bars.

Ashar added. " Letters to these health care providers, like OBGYNs, ER Doctors are critical to the diagnosis of this disease". There have been more than 600 cases of BIA-ACLC recorded globally in which 16 women have died, nine coming from the U.S, Dr.

Andres Lopez Elorez was sentenced for one count of conspiracy to import a controlled substance into the USA - a charge that does not even begin to describe the strangeness of his crime.

Elorez pled in September and initially faced ten years to life in prison. Puppies weren't the drug ring's only smuggling methods, and 22 Colombian nationals were ultimately arrested in connection with that case, charged with importing over 18kg (40 pounds) of heroin into the US.

During his sentencing on Thursday, Elorez told officials that he'd "conspired with an experienced veterinarian" to execute the drug-smuggling plan, ABC News reported.

Donna, a beagle, was adopted by a Colombian police officer and his family.

"This Office and our law enforcement partners will continue to investigate and prosecute drug trafficking organizations, operating here and overseas, to reduce the availability of opioids and save American lives".

And in an ironic twist, one of the rescued puppies has gone on to become a drug-detection dog named Heroina.
