A Third Person Is Reportedly HIV-Free After a Bone Marrow Transplant

He was later diagnosed with advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma, cancer of the immune system. This mutation effectively locks the door to HIV, meaning it can not get into our cells and set up shop as a replication machine. The man dubbed the "London patient" has now been off his antiviral medicines for 18 months and there's been no sign of HIV in his system so far.

In 2007, Timothy Ray Brown, 52, formerly referred to as the "Berlin patient", was named as the first man cured of HIV.

The doctors stressed the need for proper guidelines around the new treatment, which, if proved successful in more cases, could change lives of millions of people.

This is incredible news, but it begs the question: why isn't this procedure more widely available?

The surgical replacement of bone marrow with the stem cells of patients who have the CCR5 genetic mutation must be followed by hospitalization where patients can be monitored for and treated against tissue rejection.

CCR5 receptor is most commonly used by the HIV-1 virus to enter cells. It can be replicated.

Federal Bureau of Investigation wiretap reveals LSU's Will Wade discussed 'offer' with convicted middleman
But if the information reported in the wiretaps holds true, he could be in a heap of trouble - and not just with the NCAA. Sports reporters Pat Forde, Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel, and an additional report by ESPN .

Co-organised by Vietnam Authority for HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC), Ministry of Health and the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the events mark an important milestone in securing domestic sustainable financing for the HIV response in Việt Nam and ensuring that people living with HIV access treatment services.

This announcement at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle comes just two days after the second person in history was announced to be HIV-free on Monday, March 4.

New Scientist reports that the Düsseldorf and London cases share stark similarities: both patients underwent bone marrow transplants as part of their cancer treatment, receiving cells from donors with the rare mutation of the gene CCR5. Unfortunately, both men relapsed.

The process is not scalable, since it can not be used on all HIV patients - only a small group of cancer patients failing all other cancer treatment interventions who also have HIV. We can't safely say that yet, but it is one of only a handful of instances when we have seen eradication of HIV in this way, and so it remains exciting.

However, it's not just surviving the transplant that confers the HIV "cure" or remission. Attempting to introduce CCR5 through other means is another.

The subsequent media hype surrounding the reported cure of the London patient very much reminds the plague generation of the speculation around a possible "cure for AIDS" when protease inhibitors and the triple therapy "AIDS cocktail" were first introduced in 1996.
