"I have concluded that I must resign as a member of cabinet". Prior to her career in politics, Philpott was a family doctor. They have accomplished little beyond politics and can not contemplate the inner emptiness of voluntarily removing themselves from the action.

One of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's top ministers has quit saying she has lost confidence in the government's handling of a corruption case. But I must abide by my core values, my ethical responsibilities and constitutional obligations. There can be a cost to acting on one's principles, but there is a bigger cost to abandoning them.

Philpott's resignation from cabinet today over the SNC-Lavalin affair shocked an official Ottawa still reeling from the resignation of her personal friend and former colleague Jody Wilson-Raybould - and from Wilson-Raybould's damning allegations of political interference in her work as justice minister over the SNC-Lavalin file. When Wilson-Raybould resigned from cabinet, Philpott made a public statement of support for her.

Ms Wilson Raybould has said she and her staff faced four months of a "sustained" and "inappropriate effort" late past year to push for a possible deferred prosecution agreement for the Quebec-based engineering and construction company.

Philpott says she will continue to serve as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Markham-Stouffville.

"Jane Philpott has done an outstanding job in all of her portfolios and served Canadians exceptionally well", he said, adding that he's pleased she intends to remain in the Liberal caucus.

Following Philpott's resignation, Andrew Scheer took to Twitter, again calling for the prime minister's resignation.

"Unfortunately, the evidence of efforts by politicians and/or officials to pressure the former Attorney General to intervene in the criminal case involving SNC-Lavalin, and the evidence as to the content of those efforts have rasied serious concerns for me", she said in a statement posted to social media. Those concerns have been augmented by the views expressed by my constituents and other Canadians.

Philpott is a real loss to government, having earned good reviews as health minister before moving to the newly created post at Indigenous services.

"There are a diversity of perspectives on this", she said. In January, she was named president of the Treasury Board and also Minister of Digital Government.

But it turns out it is not just journalists and partisans who believe Trudeau used his cabinet-making power to interfere with the attorney general's prosecutorial independence. "Trudeau's story changes daily and won't come clean with Canadians". That he did not made him look like someone with something to hide.

Trudeau faced calls to resign last week after Wilson-Raybould said that allies of the prime minister had launched "consistent and sustained effort" to dissuade her from prosecuting Quebec-based engineering company SNC Lavalin over accusations of fraud and bribery. If so, what was the context?

Trudeau denied the allegations, but a lot has happened since then.

Philpott cited cabinet solidarity for justifying her decision, arguing she could not be expected to defend the government's decision.
