Browns release Collins after reportedly failing to land trade

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that at least three teams spoke to the Browns at the Scouting Combine about a potential deal for Johnson. The team announced they were releasing the former New England Patriots linebacker Wednesday afternoon.

After the Browns signed running back Kareem Hunt last month, General Manager John Dorsey was asked if the team would be looking to trade Duke Johnson to clear some space in a suddenly crowded running back group. "These types of decisions are never easy".

Cleveland acquired Collins from the New England Patriots during the 2016 season for a 2017 third-round draft pick. While the Patriots appear set at linebacker next season with Dont'a Hightower, Kyle Van Noy, Ja'Whaun Bentley and Elandon Roberts, perhaps Collins could fill the situational pass rusher role they envisioned for him during the 2016 season.

Cleveland reportedly attempted to trade Collins both at last season's deadline and this offseason before finally deciding to simply release the high-paid defender.

Yet to hit the age of 30, Collins is entering into his seventh season in the National Football League and will be looking for his third team. Now, eyes will turn to Bill Belichick to see if the Patriots will make a move to try and bring Collins back.

If the Buccaneers are unable to retain Alexander this offseason and Beckwith's ankle turns out to be career-ending, then inquiring about the possibility of adding Collins to the roster should be a given, especially if his services can be obtained on a short-term, reasonably low-cost deal.
