The world No 1 slipped to a shock defeat

The world No 1 slipped to a shock defeat

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning defeat against Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. But the five-time defending champion was clearly not at his best when the match resumed today, suffering a straight-sets defeat (6-4, 6-4) to leave the tournament in the third round.

But fresh from his win over Nick Kyrgios, Kohlschreiber went on the attack against a sluggish Djokovic.

Speaking on his victory over Nole, Kohlschreiber said, "I think I put out a pretty good strategy on the court, very clever serve, good return game - it was a good day".

"Today, with Novak being No.1, top-seeded here, it's a very incredible win for me". So everything came together.

Djokovic owned an 8-1 record against Kohlschreiber, who beat a No. 1 player for the first time.

"Unfortunately the tournament is not over. I'm really excited about that and [will] get some good practice in". Today I want to take the moment, celebrate with my coach.

"I had to get over it [defeat to Kohlschreiber] in an hour", he added. "Honestly, at a time like this with that scoreline, I would usually feel very depressed and sad".

Djokovic's loss came on the same day that women's world number one Naomi Osaka saw her title defense hopes dashed, falling 6-3 6-1 to Belinda Bencic.

Serbia's Djokovic, who now holds three of the four Grand Slam titles, was beaten 6-4, 6-4 in his third round match at the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event against Germany's world number 39 Phlipp Kohlschreiber.

The bottom half of the men's draw still includes No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and fourth-seeded Roger Federer, both of whom breezed to victory.

"She forced the issue on every point, didn't make a lot of errors, played defensively when she had to, played offensively", Williams said of her German opponent, ranked No. 97.

American John Isner never faced a break point during his comfortable 6-3 6-4 win over Guido Pella.

He upset second seed Marin Cilic in the Round of 32, snapping a 12-match losing streak against Top 10 players.

Monfils has a 13-2 career record against Kohlschreiber.

Muguruza next faces 18-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who surprised China's 18th-seeded Wang Qiang 7-5, 6-2. Nadal eased by 25th-seeded Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-1, while Federer defeated Swiss countryman Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4.

Bencic, who beat four top-10 players on the way to winning a title in Dubai last month, now plays world number five Karolína Plíšková of the Czech Republic, who beat Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, in the quarter-finals.
