Failure to replace Ronaldo's goals is Real's 'biggest problem' - Modric

Modric's was asked about the lack of Cristiano Ronaldo's goals and if they are the reason Real are not as potent as they once were, which drew an impassioned response.

Luka Modric says Real Madrid are struggling in the current campaign due to the club's inability to sign a quality replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo after his switch to Juventus last summer.

"After having won the Champions League the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly impacting the team".

"Cristiano is a player that every team would miss", Modric said.

According to Daily Mail report, the Croatian playmaker, who was speaking Monday ahead of the Los Blancos Champions League last-16, reverse fixture against Ajax on Tuesday insists the club's current strikers have also failed to step into the role vacated by Ronaldo.

Los Blancos lead 2-1 from the first leg after goals from Benzema and Asensio.

Speaking to Marca, the former Blancos star said, "It's a hard moment, it's not been easy for Real Madrid since the beginning of the season".

Los Blancos have looked a lot more vulnerable without the five-time Ballon d'Or victor, who scored 450 goals in 438 matches for the Spanish giants before he left for Juventus.

"Some had to take a step forward, and though not score 50, but at least score 15-20, or even ten goals". But we don't have that.

"That's why I think scoring is our biggest problem this season".

Real Madrid was held scoreless in the losses to Barcelona despite creating many significant opportunities at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Ronaldo quit Real for Juventus last summer where he is now setting new goalscoring records. The club has not made any major signings since he left, sticking to the players it already had.

"Of course we miss him, given everything he did for the club".

But they failed to sign a big-money replacement and only three of their players have scored more than five goals this season - Karim Benzema (20), out-of-favour Gareth Bale (13) and centre-back Sergio Ramos (11). It added Mariano (Diaz) to the squad, and Vinicius Junior is showing that he has potential. "[Vinicius] is doing very well for the age he is but sometimes things don't go how we wanted them to".
