When showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff signed on to create the "Thrones" television adaptation, they had an infamous meeting with Martin where he spelled out the intended ending to his book series. "I haven't read the [final-season] scripts and haven't been able to visit the set because I've been working on Winds", Martin reveals.

We know that the show will finish this year and give us some kind of ending for the story, but how different things will develop in the books is anyone's guess? But there's a lot of minor-character (arcs) they'll be coming up with on their own.

Martin is also acting as a consultant for several possible spin-off shows, the first of which is being called The Long Night for now and will start filming this year. "There may be important discrepancies", Martin said.

Martin says while he has "mixed feelings" about the end of the TV show he will not be leaving Cersei Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and the Stark family behind. "Anybody who's read the books knows that task in and of itself requires about 64 hours a day to do properly, and the differences between the show and the books became hard to track in parallel - it's nearly like he was in a weird science-fiction movie trying to keep two similar-but-different universes in his mind at the same time". Martin then went on to add. "Now that the show is ahead of the books, it seems the show could ruin the books for people". While Martin used to contribute one episode of the show per season, he stopped doing that after the fourth season in order to focus on his books.

Martin didn't share how far along he is on writing The Winds of Winter, but he did note how he wished he'd finished the books sooner, because he "never anticipated" the show surpassing his own story. The showrunners have agreed to keep what isn't in line with the books a secret so as not to spoil things for people when they come to read the finished works. He had previously filmed an appearance in the show's original pilot, playing a guest in Dany's wedding. She said: "I think a lot of fans will be disappointed, and a lot of fans will be over the moon". In their interview, Benioff and Weiss say they have changed Martin's ending so that readers can feel like the books are still "fresh" upon reading them. "It's not the end for me".

Fast-forward 23 years later, and we are mere weeks away from the final season of the hit HBO series; while Martin's two remaining books are nowhere to be seen. "I better live a long time because I have a lot of work left to do". EW.com will continue to have daily coverage through the end of the season.
