Ghosn seeks court permission to attend Nissan board meeting on Tuesday

A Japanese court has rejected a request by former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn, released on bail last week, to attend the Japanese automaker's board meeting on Tuesday.

Prosecutors submitted a document to the Tokyo District Court from Nissan stating its opposition to Ghosn attending Tuesday's board meeting, Ghosn's lawyer, Junichiro Hironaka, told reporters. Ghosn has said the claims of improper payments were a "distortion of reality".

The plan is aimed at fostering more balanced decision-making represented by Senard, Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa and Mitsubishi Motors CEO Osamu Masuko.

Hironaka said Ghosn had received an invitation to the meeting with details of a time and location, and that there had been no discussion on whether he would attend in person or not.

The proposed arrangement will have no impact on the existence of the RAMA.

That would replace Dutch-based companies now linking Nissan and Renault and, separately, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors, the people said.

The restrictions say he cannot tamper with evidence, and attending the board meeting could be seen as putting pressure on Nissan employees. Other conditions of Ghosn's bail include having to live in a residence monitored from outside by camera.

Britain braces for decisive week of Brexit votes
Lawmakers would then vote on Wednesday or Thursday on whether to postpone Brexit, which might be the only choice at that point. If her deal is rejected, there will be two more votes this week to give MPs the final say on ruling out a no-deal scenario.

The request also comes as the three partners plan to set up a joint board meeting structure where Renault's new chairman, Jean-Dominique Senard, is likely to take the chair, according to separate sources familiar with the matter. The ousted executive faces charges of aggravated breach of trust and under-reporting his salary by about $82 million at Nissan for almost a decade.

As Nissan's CEO, Ghosn actively engaged with the press and probably will seek to make the case for his innocence in interviews and possibly a news conference as soon as this week.

The court did not give a reason for its ruling.

"I wonder if Mr. Ghosn has ever had any love or sense of attachment to Nissan as a company", Saikawa said.

The bigger question is whether a planned merger between Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi will happen.

This structure will replace the current organisation that brings together Nissan and Renault, which is headquartered in Amsterdam.

"Now that Ghosn's influential leadership is gone, there' is a risk that each party will become more sharply focused on their self-interests", said Tatsuo Yoshida, an analyst at Sawakami Asset Management.
