The Frenchman led Madrid to three consecutive Champions League titles before surprising the football world by handing in his resignation.

The once majestic midfielder said the team needed a "new discourse" 10 months ago, but the 46-year-old returns to the Bernabeu bench today.

Gareth Bale was also named in the starting line-up at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday as Madrid launched their new era under Zidane at home to Celta Vigo in La Liga.

The 1998 World Cup victor inherits a far different dressing room from the when he left in more ways than one.

Having left the club last summer, Zidane returned to Real on Monday after the side were eliminated from both the Copa del Rey and Champions League in humiliating fashion. But with just 11 matches left to play this season, and no trophies to win, Zidane has opted to use the players he knows well from his previous spell.

Zidane has hinted they are ready to return, however, saying: "Isco and Marcelo are ready to play tomorrow. There are of course those who are sometimes going to be left out, who are not going to play".

But Real Madrid chiefs recently fired Santiago Solari after poor games this season and made a decision to hire former coach Zidane.

As is common practice in Spain, Real's 19-man matchday squad has been confirmed. Karim Benzema did put the ball in the back of the net but the whistle had been blown for a foul by Gareth Bale in the buildup.
