CHRISTCHURCH residents woke to the sound of loud bangs as armed police dragged a man from a damaged vehicle in an otherwise quiet suburban street overnight.

Police negotiators spoke with the man over a number of hours and officers approached the vehicle at around 3.40am, Bush said, when they found him critically injured with what appeared to be a stab wound.

National police commissioner Mike Bush said Christchurch police found several firearms in a search of a local property late Tuesday evening.

"A knife was located in the vehicle".

There were no firearms in the auto, however, which was also cleared by explosives experts.

Another interviewee clarified to Omar that the State Department's new policy would not allow USA gun manufacturers to violate other nations' firearm laws, meaning residents of countries like New Zealand - which put forward stricter gun control in response to the Christchurch terrorist attacks - would not be able to import rifles that are illegal in their locality.

Mr Bush said that, at this time, there is no evidence to suggest the man was connected to the March 15 terrorist attack, but that they are looking at any potential link.

I remain extremely proud of the Police response to the events in Christchurch on Friday 15 March.

Wednesday's police investigation comes as New Zealand's intelligence minister said he was allowing spy agencies to carry out "intrusive" activities following the gun rampage.

Andrew Little - the minister responsible for the GCSB and SIS intelligence services - said he had signed powerful surveillance warrants as information gathering continued in the wake of the attack.

Poulton Ave resident Joanna Qereqeretabua told the New Zealand Herald she woke around 3.30am to shouts of, "Get out of the vehicle!"

"The goal of a warrant is to authorise and effectively make lawful what would otherwise be unlawful activity". Little said he maintained confidence in the intelligence services, adding it was "premature" to say they had failed until the inquiry into their actions was complete.
