Problematic Williams gives Kubica zero time to soak up comeback

By any measure, Williams have had a chaotic preparation for the season-opener, with technical director Paddy Lowe taking "a leave of absence" after they failed to finish their new auto in time for the start of testing in Barcelona and turned up two days late.

The Pole won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix for BMW Sauber and was nearly recruited by Williams for the 2018 season but was passed over in favour of Russian Sergei Sirotkin.

The vehicle was the slowest on track when it did appear, exacerbating the side's melancholy after coming last in 2018.

The 34-year-old's injuries mean he can not grip a steering wheel in the conventional way with his right hand, on which his fingers do not fully close, and certain controls for the vehicle have to be re-sited as a result.

Kubica sat alongside the iconic quartet of Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Red Bull drivers at a press conference before the season's curtain-raiser.

Kubica said he never entirely gave up on the idea of returning to F1, but there were plenty of doubts before he finally got a start with Williams for the 2019 season. He said: 'I haven't had a lot of time to think about my emotions, I've been focused on the job, focused on the things to do.

The seven-time grand prix victor stunned the paddock by ditching Red Bull after five years for a "fresh start" and said he was raring to go for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at the weekend.

And Ricciardo is delighted to see the 34-year-old back on the grid after overcoming such adversity.

"Robert mentioned he had a pretty long "winter break".

The Williams team, which placed last in the constructors' championship previous year, didn't get off to a good start in 2019 after the vehicle arrived late for winter testing.

"So I just think it's awesome to see him back".

Formula One has introduced a new rule awarding a championship point to the driver that can put in the fastest lap on race day - so long as they finish in the top 10.

Kubica, for his part, tried to keep things on track as much as possible.

"There is no point in wasting energy and time thinking of hard moments, we just need to do our job".

It'll certainly be each to spot who's who in the Renault cars this season and we're sure fans will be grateful for that!
