Right elbow injury sidelines Salvy

Royals catcher Salvador Perez suffered an injury to his right elbow in Wednesday's workout in Surprise, Arizona, the team announced Friday.

The Royals' official statement said only that Perez sustained an injury during a workout and underwent an MRI on Thursday, which revealed the damage. Salvy will travel to Los Angeles next week to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache for a second opinion.

The 28-year-old has been an All-Star for six straight seasons and won Gold Gloves in five of the last six years.

Perez is coming off a season in which he batted.235 with 27 home runs and 80 RBIs, was named an American League All-Star and earned AL Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards at catcher. Current backup options are Cam Gallagher and Meibrys Viloria, Baseball America noted.
