Teen vaccinated despite mom's objections to testify to Congress

He Got Vaccinated Against Parents Wishes. Now He'll Address US Senate

"I've had people contact me that are in a similar situation, where they want to pursue vaccinations and their parent or authority figure doesn't believe it's right", Lindenberger told Good Morning America on February 12. The reason behind this making news is that his parents were against vaccination and he got himself inoculated against their wishes.

Ethan Lindenberger from the United States turned a rebel when he questioned his parents' anti-vaccine acts, and then got himself vaccinated, grabbing eyeballs from the national media. He will make an appearance during a hearing on the reappearance of preventable diseases in the United States.

An Ohio teen who rebelled against his parents by seeking vaccinations will testify before a Senate Committee Tuesday. As of Sunday afternoon, 70 cases of measles had been confirmed in Washington's Clark County this year, according to the state's Department of Health.

"I grew up in an anti-vaxx household", Lindenberger said in a YouTube video about the hearing.

According to Ethan, his mother believed in vaccination conspiracies such as it causing autism and thus he wasn't vaccinated for years. He solicited advice on how to do so without his parents' permission in a Reddit post in mid-November, which has since gone viral.

OH is one of the seventeen states in the U.S. which allows parents to choose if they wish to vaccinate their children for moral or philosophical reasons.

Pentagon officials say instead of the massive war games, the US and South Korea will hold a series of small-scale exercises. National security adviser John Bolton listens during a press briefing at the White House, Jan. 28, 2019, in Washington .

His mother, Jill Wheeler, told Undark, an online science magazine that first reported Lindenberger's story, that her son's decision was "like him spitting on me, saying 'You don't know anything, I don't trust you with anything".

Ethan's parents have five children, including his 2-year-old sister who he believes will probably not be vaccinated.

"It breaks my heart that she could get measles and she would be done", he said. According to the CDC, there were 17 outbreaks nationwide a year ago, primarily concentrated in three states.

The Senate hearing comes as 68 people have contracted measles in the Pacific Northwest, the Associated Press reported.

Measles in these places were mostly caught by non-vaccinated people in Orthodox Jewish Communities. OR and Washington state allow parents to opt out of vaccinating their children for personal or philosophical reasons, and the region is home to a particularly vocal concentration of parents who choose not to get their children vaccinated.

The CDC says measles outbreaks can be linked to an increase in the number of people who travel overseas and bring the disease back to the United States and to communities with pockets of unvaccinated individuals. Experts in public health are almost unanimous in the belief that vaccines are one of the best tools we have to keep the public safe from infectious diseases and that the decision to forgo vaccinations put the lives of many, particularly those who are vulnerable like the young and elderly, at risk.
