Ospreys and Scarlets in action but they could be a combined force next season

A radical merger between Ospreys and Scarlets is on the cards ahead of a meeting of Welsh rugby's top brass on Tuesday.

Wales would still have four regions, with the union pushing ahead with plans for a professional outfit in the north of the country.

Martyn Phillips, the WRU chief executive, has always been keen to establish a new outfit in north Wales, which has led to the Dragons, Cardiff Blues, Ospreys and Scarlets.

Harry Kane: Tottenham need to 'step up under pressure'
He told us: "They are with the squad but we need to assess them this afternoon and tomorrow to see if they are in contention".

The PRB is a gathering of representatives from the five professional entities in Welsh rugby: the WRU, plus regional sides Scarlets, Ospreys, Cardiff Blues and WRU-owned Dragons.

Ospreys, who play at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea, now lie fifth in the PRO 14's Conference A, while Llanelli-based Scarlets are fourth in Conference B. Last week, several leading players, including the Wales captain, Alun Wyn Jones, met Martyn Phillips, the WRU's chief executive, to discuss the changes.

"Project reset" will be discussed at a meeting tomorrow, but reports have already emerged indicating staff at both clubs have been made aware of the plan.
