The U.S. government is offering $1 million for help tracking down the son of the late terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. He has released audio and video messages calling for attacks against the US and its allies.

Letters from Osama Bin Laden seized from his compound in Abbottabad where he was killed indicated that he had been grooming Hamza, thought to be his favourite son, to replace him as leader of al-Qaeda, the U.S. state department said. Per the State Department, the 2015 declaration included an audio message in which Hamza "called for acts of terrorism in Western capitals".

Bin Laden, who according to the United States is around 30, has threatened attacks against the United States to avenge the 2011 killing of his father, who was living in hiding in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad, by USA special forces. At the time, officials stated that Osama's body was later buried at sea.

The location of Hamza bin Laden, sometimes dubbed the "crown prince of jihad", has been the subject of speculation for years with reports of him living in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria or under house arrest in Iran.

Osama bin Laden became the world's most wanted man following the 2001 September 11 World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks when four commercial jets crashed into the Twin towers, one into the top United States defence site and another in a field in Pennsylvania. "But he could be anywhere though in. south central Asia", said Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security Michael Evanoff.
