Bartomeu: We couldn't compete with Man United for Paul Pogba

Bartomeu told ESPN FC that the Camp Nou outfit had reached an agreement with Juve and Pogba's agent Mino Raiola a year earlier, which meant they could match any offer that the Italian champions accepted.

"In 2015, Pogba was playing for Juventus and we said to them that if they ever chose to sell, we would be interested in him", Bartomeu stated.

"When they told us what United had offered, we simply could not raise that sort of money".

At least, that's how France Football see it this week, as the magazine make a case for Pogba's transfer to Real Madrid and why the former Juventus star "needs" to swap Manchester for Spain's capital.

BBC leads the way for broadcasters closing gender pay gap
Driving improvements in equality, diversity and inclusion - including closing the gender pay gap - is a top priority for the RIBA. All companies and public bodies with 250 employees or more are required to publish their median and mean gender pay gap figures.

Paul Pogba answered that it was a "dream" to play for Real Madrid and to work with French legend Zinedine Zidane when quizzed about it during the recently concluded worldwide break, leading to massive speculation that the midfielder was angling for a move away from Manchester United in the summer.

"What I have to recognise is that United, in the last few years, have created a very good group, good players that are coming through".

The 28-year-old has shone once again this season and has been one of the stand-out players in the Premier League, netting 14 goals and providing 12 assists for his team-mates.

In a rallying call to Pogba ahead of the first leg of United's Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona at Old Trafford tomorrow, Phelan said there was "still a lot more to come" from the World Cup victor and wants him to embrace the future at the club.
